Potassium is used by all life, it's the 5th major element in seawater behind calcium. Based on dry mass in algae beds and scrubbers - depending on species - for every 1-5kgs of dry algae grown you use 20ppm of potassium. So that could answer Jeff and others sinks.
In bacteria and carbon sourcing it's a bit more technical. Certainly used and dry masses are understood, however the is a deeper aspect to potassium.
In zeolith based methods the stones used can bring potassium, also through binding they export it.
With bacteria the dry mass iss normally 2-3% of both potassium and phosphorus. So for every 1.5mg of phosphate consumed you use around 0.5mg of potassium.
In free carbon sourcing that doesn't amount to much use in the aquairum. however basic chemistry isn't a sole factor, in biochemistry the are aspects regarding trace elements in the aquarium as these play a role in the behaviour of other elements and their effects on life in the tank.
The saturation of elements and their ratios effect the bacteria and performance of the life generally. Bacteria fix metals in the ligands, both by attachmednt and presence such things like copper act as cellular inhibitors to antiporter enzymes like Na+/K+-Atpase which evacuate the cells of sodium and flood them with potassium.
As in the same way that excessive potassium can inhibit the uptake of phosphate.
When you add or increase free sources of potassium they are assimalated quickly by cells above background levels as they take a fresh boost. So in their abundance and the presence of other elements they exhaust your supply upon its application - saying nothing of testing levels or saturation.
This is an important aspect in carbon sourcing and seen as even more important in methods like Zeo/Ultra because of the structure of elements and the incorporated zeolith.
Although in administering potassium based on supply and effect you can consider that as waste is brought down and the supply of nutrient decreases the addition of potassium may tail out without permanent sinks of forcing cell production by excessive sourcing.
